Don’t stress about French genders

I know it’s a weird concept for English speaking folks, but it’s just the way it is: everything in French has a gender. Everything is either feminine or masculine. No exception.

Sometimes it’s easy: une femme (a woman) is feminine, un homme (a man) is masculine.

But what about a table, a salmon, a phone, a city, France, California, Texas? Yes they all have genders. By the way, in case you’re wondering, California is a girl and Texas is a boy.

With most of my students and no matter their levels of fluency, I feel their stress, their fear of getting it wrong. There is a pause in the otherwise more or less flowing conversation, followed by a “Wait! Are teeth feminine or masculine?”

If this sounds familiar, and I bet it does, then this video is for you! Enjoy!
