6 French Expressions with “chien”

Woof woof!

If you don’t already know that about me… I love my dogs! J’adore mes chiens!

So today I’m going to introduce them to you! And in case you were here to learn some French I will give you 6 French expressions with the word “chien”.

Vous êtes prêts?

Et voilà Bruno! Bonjour Bruno! Also known as the biggest turd in the world because he is a very naughty little boy! He of course tries to boss around Sophie, the pit-bull mix who thinks she is a little tiny mouse! My crazy dogs!

(see them live in the video above they are so cute!)

Now that you know my babies, you are ready to learn some good expressions. C’est parti!

Before we start you need some context. The following expressions are quite negative but you have to understand that they are old and being a dog a century ago was not as fun as today. Definitely did not get the amount of love that today’s dogs get.

Il fait un temps de chien = The weather is really bad

Quelle chienne de vie = Life’s a bitch

Non, non, I’m not swearing! It is the word for a female dog!

Mon cou me fait un mal de chien = My neck hurts like crazy

And now some more positive ones!!!

Avoir du chien = To have a certain something, to be charming, to be sexy

Entre chien et loup = Dusk, when the light is such that you can barely see the difference between a dog and a wolf.

Nom d’un chien! = For goodness sake!

I love knowing fun expressions in a foreign language. They show you have a subtle & authentic knowledge of the language. In other words, you have my full permission to show off.
