One of the French personality traits is that we are rebels! It is not just a stereotype!
We are a people of riots and revolutions!
“There isn’t a governessy bone in the French body. If you want to walk on forbidden grass or cross and intersection against a red light, switch traffic lanes unannounced, turn right on the lefthand lane, or drive down a one way street the wrong way, feel free. No honks, shouts, or fist shaking as in Vienna, Zurich, or Frankfurt. Liberté means freedom from other citizens’ notions of civic correctness. It’s your adult right to decide whether the law is reasonable or your situation exceptional.” Polly Platt
And we are taught young!
Have you heard of “Le Petit Nicolas”? Him and his friends are true rebel little boys from the 1950’s. Adorable!
The series of French books for children created by René Goscinny and illustrated by Jean-Jacques Sempé were so popular that they were made into a movie a few years ago!
Have a look at the trailer and listen to the theme song by Renan Luce, a wonderful and young French singer songwriter.

Qu’on l’écrivait
On était tous l’égal
Let’s do it and worry about it afterwards
You will see that a jump in a puddle
Is well worth all the slaps in the world
One more lark will not matter
Let’s do it and worry about it afterwards
You will see that ringing doorbells
And running away before they come out
Is worth a shot
My best larks – I will always remember
As if there was a contest
For the most forbidden thing
To do on a Wednesday
The best larks are not so far away
I can still see the corner
Where I would scratch for ages
The paint peeling off
Our poetry, it was easy
And without raven, and without fox
That we wrote it
With big kicks at a ball
One window pane less, I get promoted
I was growing up
Let’s do it and worry about it afterwards
You will see that a jump in a puddle
Is well worth all the slaps in the world
One more lark will not matter
Let’s do it and worry about it afterwards
You will see that ringing doorbells
And running away before they come out
Is worth a shot
The best larks were done amongst pals
It did not matter if you were posh
We were all equal
Amongst punching brothers
The best larks even though we do them as a gang
There is a rule among thieves:
Punishment comes only
To the one who caused the trouble
My most favourite fable without a doubt
Is the one about the toad and the mammoth
That explodes
Since I hit her with a catapult
My little sister keeps an eyelid
Half-closed
One more lark will not matter
Let’s do it and worry about it afterwards
You will see that a jump in a puddle
Is well worth all the slaps in the world
One more lark will not matter
Let’s do it and worry about it afterwards
You will see that ringing doorbells
And running away before they come out
Is worth a shot
One more lark will not matter
Let’s do it and worry about it afterwards
You will see that a jump in a puddle
Is well worth all the slaps in the world
One more lark will not matter
Let’s do it and worry about it afterwards
You will see that ringing doorbells
And running away before they come out
Is worth a shot
