LISA’S WEEK IN CHARTRES

“C’est génial, c’est super!

This week with Virginie has been wonderful and life changing for many reasons so I’ll try to be precise :

1- Chartres is an amazing city. Though I have been here before, I discovered something new every time we went out with Virginie.

2- Virginie herself is warm, is welcoming, is a great teacher, is non-judgmental so immediately I felt at ease and able to speak. So don’t hesitate, sign up, get in line, and be the next to take this class!”

100% FRENCH EXPERIENCE

How best to improve your French conversation skills than by being in France, surrounded with French culture and French people who will ONLY speak French to you? Yet so many times I have heard visitors express their disappointment at not really being given the chance to practice their French. Why? Because more & more French people, especially in big cities, speak English fairly well and are just so excited to practice their new skills with you! This ends up being nice and comfortable for you but not so satisfying or helpful for improving your French speaking ability!

DAY 1: Cathédrale, Renaissance, et Cocktails

What best way to begin our week together and break the ice than with cocktail / cooking class and divine architecture?

Morning: Petit-déjeuner at the hotel, general introduction, and class.

Lunch: Free or together with suggested options.

Afternoon & evening: Visite de la cathédrale de Chartres avec Art Historian Gilles Fresson as our private guide. Visite de la librairie L’Esperluète located in stunning Renaissance building with bookstore owner Olivier L’Hostis. We will then be making our own dinner and evening cocktails with local Chef Aurélie Bernon. (you can make alcoholic or non-alcoholic cocktails)

DAY 2: Oldest Stained Glass Company in France

After la cathédrale, let’s jump deeper into the topic and explore the art of stained glass

Morning: Petit-déjeuner at the hotel & class.

Lunch: Free or together with suggested options.

Afternoon & evening: Élodie Vally the proud owner of La Maison Lorin, the oldest stained glass company in France, will enter the doors of her kingdom for us and introduce us to the art of stained glass.

DAY 3: Paris field trip and treasure hunt

Chartres is only one hour away on the train from Chartres… allons-y!

Morning: Let’s hop on the train and explore le 14ème arrondissement de Paris (one of my favorites)

Lunch: Free or together with suggested options.

Afternoon & evening: We’ll stay in Paris 14 and meet with mon amie Flora Doubilet whose company Paris Solidari-thé organizes treasure hunts all over Paris! The purpose of each of her events is to make you find your way around unusual Paris while meeting several Parisiens who are awaiting your visit and your questions!

DAY 4: Meet local artisans

Apparently the beauty of Chartres inspires artists and artisans! Let’s meet two of them and get creative ourselves!

Morning: Petit-déjeuner at the hotel & class.

Lunch: Free or together with suggested options.

Afternoon & evening: Meet local leatherworker Léa Beaugé in the adorable Bonjour Bonheur boutique she opened in the heart of Chartres to showcase her work as well as the work of 20 other local artisans. After that we’ll head to our screen printing workshop with local artist Catherine Schnoebelen.

DAY 5: Labyrinth & Château de Maintenon

Did you know there was a magical labyrinth hidden under the seats de la cathédrale de Chartres? Every Friday, the chairs are taken away so that people can find their way, literally and figuratively, à travers le labyrinthe.

Morning: Petit-déjeuner at the hotel & class.

Lunch: Free or together with suggested options.

Afternoon & evening: We’ll experience the world famous Chartres labyrinth and after that we’ll hop on the train again for 15 minutes and find ourselves surrounded with more magic : le sublime Château de Maintenon where a private guide will take us through the castle, the park, and the gardens.

DAY 6: Organic Market, Cafés, & Shopping

Chartres is the perfect destination for a delightful and carefree Saturday.

Morning: Petit-déjeuner at the hotel & off to the farmers market!

Lunch: Free or together with suggested options.

Afternoon & evening: Shopping, lounging, exploring, whatever you feel like doing et pourquoi pas une petite séance cinéma in the evening?

DAY 7: Peaceful & green au revoir

Chartres is filled with charming nature, ponds, parks, and crossed by the beautiful river l’Eure.

Morning: Petit-déjeuner at the hotel & class.

Lunch: Free or together with suggested options.

Afternoon: Let’s explore the beautiful nature of Chartres (don’t worry I’ll come up with un plan b if the weather decides not to cooperate!)

Evening: Let’s say au revoir autour d’un bon dîner au restaurant.

More Info

One of the many things I adore about Paris is that it is so walkable! I personally rarely take the métro and try to walk everywhere trying to use a different route each time so I am forever mesmerized. Since we’ll be sitting pretty much every morning for class, we’ll make up for it the rest of the day by exploring, which means a fair amount of walking! Walking is the finest way to soak it all in and notice all the details.

The easier route to Chartres, assuming you’re flying to Paris CDG :

-From CDG, take le RER B until Paris Denfert-Rochereau
-Get off at Denfert-Rochereau and walk to la gare Montparnasse
-From la gare Montparnasse, take a direct train to Chartres, which will take about an hour

C’est très facile!
