In case one of your bonnes résolutions for 2017 was to eat less cake, forget about it, for at least one more week. Because this week is my week. Ok it’s not my week. But it is time for my favorite cake of all times, this one particular cake that you can only buy during the first week of January. And then you have to wait a whole year!
It’s the best cake in the whole wide world, every French person loves it.
I’m going to give you the recipe in French followed by a little history class to explain its origin!
Vous êtes prêt?
It’s a recipe, une recette, that I found on a favorite French website called marmiton.org
Feel free to check it out and use it for other French dishes!

La galette des rois is an old tradition we owe to the Roman Empire. The Romans came up with a genius idea to try and appease any bitterness that slaves could feel towards their masters. Never fun to be a slave. Except, during Les Saturnales. Every year, the few days of the winter solstice are used to worship the Roman God Saturne, Cronos in Greek.
If you have ever eaten a galette des rois in the French manner then you will recognize the process, if you haven’t eaten une galette des rois before, go buy one now, you can watch the rest of the video later.
During this party, the slaves were to eat a cake, which was prepared with a trinket hidden inside. The one lucky slave who found the trinket in his piece of cake got to act like a king, un roi, all day and treat his master very badly indeed.
The general idea of les Saturnales is that masters became slaves and slaves became masters. This was meant to bring a little justice and lightness in the hard life of the slaves who once a year got to have their revenge.
Now go to your kitchen and cook la galette des rois, or go to a French bakery and buy one. Do it. Moi je vais à la boulangerie. Maintenant.
What are you up to Virginie? This is an old video heated up. The books on the windowsill gave it away. But, then, your videos are always refreshing. I’m just too lazy to bake a galette. Perhaps I can get one on line. What is the weather like at your new location?
Best wishes – Malcolm
