Voilà, c’est officiel : j’emménage à Chartres = I’m moving to Chartres! I’ve been working on getting MON (oh la la je peux dire “mon” maintenant!) appartement depuis le 23 juin 2020… It’s been quite the adventure. Not a fun one. Mostly because of my now ex horrible bank, as well as a few last minute hiccups. J’ai eu peur, j’ai stressé, j’ai paniqué, jusqu’à la dernière minute, jusqu’au rendez-vous du vendredi 9 octobre 2020 chez le notaire à Chartres, avec le vendeur et la dame de l’agence immobilière, because of one specific document (oh the French and their love of bureaucracy…) that could have messed it all up. It didn’t help that my notaire and his assistants apparently didn’t quite know about this obscure concept called la communication. I’ll spare you les détails.

Quelle angoisse! Mais maintenant, quel soulagement!

(In case you’re wondering, un notaire is a kind of lawyer who takes care of private contracts such as marriage, divorce, purchase / sale of property, inheritance, etc.)

L’arrivée à Chartres jeudi 8 octobre

If you’ve been following my blog lately (if not click HERE to make sure you do so from now on) vous savez que j’habite temporairement chez ma mère à Vienne depuis août 2020, entre mon année à Paris et la signature du contrat de vente pour l’appartement à Chartres. Pauvre maman, you should see the state of her place right now with my stuff absolument partout! Un affreux bazar! Donc last jeudi 8 octobre, je suis partie de Vienne et j’ai pris trois trains pour rejoindre Chartres en fin de journée so that I could be on site and ready pour mon rendez-vous chez le notaire le lendemain matin à 10h.

À mon arrivée à la gare de Chartres en début de soirée, je rejoins mon Airbnb, visite l’agence immobilière, et achète un livre pour me changer les idées. I had taken one of my university courses to study on the train and in my free time, mais avec le stress causé par l’incertitude quant à la signature, mon cerveau simply decided to go on strike and said : “Non! Enough is enough! Je refuse de lire les cours de philosophie! Je veux quelque chose de facile et de distrayant. J’ai besoin d’un peu de repos!”. So I gave my brain what it asked for in the shape of… drumroll… Hercule Poirot! Le parfait compagnon pour oublier ses propres problèmes auprès de ceux des autres!

Hercule et moi avons diné au Café Serpente, located juste en face de la sublime cathédrale de Chartres, before going back to my airbnb and spending my last night before the signature I had been waiting and fighting for depuis plus de trois mois.

La signature vendredi 9 octobre

Needless to say, j’ai mal dormi. Mais au moins je me réveille à l’heure. I imagine it’s the same thing for you mais j’ai toujours peur de me réveiller trop tard juste avant un rendez-vous ou un événement très important! Tout va bien et en fait je me lève before my alarm. Plenty of time. Je me prépare et je pars! Off I go! = J’y vais!

Il pleut et le ciel est tout gris but I take a few pictures anyway… histoire d’immortaliser le moment et de le partager avec vous! L’agence du notaire se trouve à quinze minutes à pied de mon airbnb and while I’m walking across this little fairy tale city (seriously it’s so cute and quaint and completely adorable, on dirait un jouet!) j’imagine que c’est ma nouvelle ville, ma nouvelle vie, de nouvelles aventures, de nouvelles rencontres, de nouveaux projets and how I could share all of it with you. En même temps je me dis : Don’t get ahead of yourself Virginie. Le contrat n’est pas encore signé. Oh la la j’ai bon espoir mais je ne peux pas m’empêcher d’avoir peur tout de même.

Turns out I was right to be scared. There had indeed been an issue with that specific document mentioned above. Mes gestes extérieurs sont calmes, mais à l’intérieur je sens mon coeur qui bat de plus en plus vite. Reste calme Virginie, reste calme… Et finalement, le notaire décides… that he doesn’t care! Wait, what!? Un miracle! Again, I stay cool on the outside like it’s complètement normal, but inside I feel an explosion of joy and relief. Je ne dis rien et le notaire passe à autre chose. Hallelujah.

Vendeur et acheteur (moi) signons, je récupère les clés, MES clés, l’agence immobilière nous offre une bouteille de Champagne (super sympa!), je remercie tout le monde, et off I go to MON appartement! It feels unreal.

Oh la la l’émotion quand j’ouvre MA porte pour la première fois! C’est chez MOI! MON appartement! MON futur projet créatif! Il a toujours été crucial pour moi d’être entourée de beauté. Even when I lived in somewhat poor conditions in France, in London, or in Seattle, I always managed to find all sorts of funky inexpensive ways to make my place look like a soothing sanctuary full of colors, art, and books, parce que sans beauté je ne peux pas être heureuse.

Malgré la beauté incontestable de mon nouvel appartement, I quickly realize that it is dégoûtant, dégueulasse, gross, filthy, yuck, berk, oh la la tellement sale! Let’s say that le vendeur et moi n’avons pas la même définition du mot “nettoyage” because if that means clean for him, well, no comment. Ça va prendre des jours pour que tout soit propre, mais, like mon amie Paola said : “I can’t believe you’re complaining your place is dirty when an hour ago you still didn’t know if it was even going to be yours or not!” Ok fine, she has a point. J’arrête de me plaindre.

Petit récapitulatif du vendredi : signature, découverte de mon appart vide (et sale!), déjeuner avec un ami (qui m’emmène ensuite manger un cheesecake vegan avocat / citron vert… un pur délice!), trois cours avec mes adorables étudiantes privées qui me font voyager à travers les États-Unis chaque vendredi après midi (merci à Randi près de New Orleans, Liz à LA, et Stefanie à Manhattan), premiers petits achats like a kettle & a cup, du savon & une éponge (really there is nothing at my place ha!), petit dîner à ma crêperie préférée La Picoterie (see picture below), and last but not least, pour finir la journée en beauté, préparation du lit de la princesse… a little inflatable mattress in the middle of an empty (and dirty!) room!

Superbe la crêperie, n’est-ce pas?

Le week-end hyper productif

Of course the main goal of this mini trip was la signature! Mais si vous me connaissez un petit peu, vous savez que j’adore être hyper productive et accomplir plein de tâches en un temps limité. So, since I’m here in Chartres for a few days, I might as well do something useful, n’est-ce pas?

Par exemple, je n’ai pas de canapé and, clearly, the above salon needs a couch. Soit! Samedi matin je pars à pied (je n’ai plus de voiture et le système de bus de Chartres ne me semble pas super efficace but I might be wrong) et je marche pendant environ une heure pour arriver au magasin where I had already seen one I liked. J’ai de la chance parce que j’ai la possibilité d’arriver à destination en longeant more or less the whole way the beautiful river called l’Eure. Plus the weather is gorgeous : il fait froid mais le ciel est bleu et le soleil brille so the lack of car turns out to be a blessing puisque ma promenade improvisée me permet de découvrir de nouveaux endroits magnifiques… voilà!

Une heure plus tard, le canapé est acheté! Enfin… je devrais dire… commandé, parce que the store won’t receive it until the end of January 2021! Zut alors! Oh well. In the meantime I guess I can fill le salon avec… un tapis? I also have a rocking chair. A rug and a rocking chair. What more do you need? Juste un peu de patience peut-être…

Ok time to walk back. Je n’ai rien mangé et j’ai faim. J’ai décidé d’essayer un nouveau restaurant aujourd’hui. Non en fait ce n’est pas exactement un restaurant. Je m’explique : il s’appelle Ma ferme en ville. Nearby organic farmers decided to open a little store so they could sell their fruits, vegetables, and eggs in downtown Chartres, mais ils proposent aussi des repas sur place! On peut commander salades, omelettes, soupes, et les manger à l’étage! Super concept, n’est-ce pas? So that’s where I’m heading to maintenant.

Going back to my hair… connaissez-vous cette citation de Gabrielle Chanel?

learn french online

Vous comprenez? A woman who gets her hair cut is a woman who is about to change her life. Je pense que c’est plutôt approprié, n’est-ce pas? Remember how long my hair used to be? All the way to my waist. J’ai fait couper plus de la moitié et voilà le résultat:

J’adore! C’est tellement agréable et facile à vivre! En plus le fait qu’ils soient plus courts et avec des longueurs différentes ajoute du volume. Bref, I’m thrilled with le changement!

Oops. Pas très pratique, mais mieux que rien! Still, I’m glad I thought of it as early as possible pour ne pas rester sans connexion internet trop longtemps.

Remember my new restaurant owners neighbors whose chairs I thought would look good dans ma salle à manger?

In this course you will find 11 videos + 150 audio files + 92 pages PDF format to help & accompany you every step of the way throughout the course. In some parts of the videos, my face will appear close up and profile so you can easily see how I make these sounds with my mouth. The 150 audio files are composed of the 100 most popular French words and the 50 most common French phrases. They are recordings of my voice, speaking slowly enough so you can easily grasp every syllable. Your French language learning experience has never been so easy, fun, and fruitful. NB: if you are the proud owner of my previous French online course 600 WORDS, don’t worry, this is not a repeat as we are now exploring 1 letter words and up, whereas in 600 WORDS we began at 4 letter words and up.

Combine knowledge with confidence…

For you to be able to have a pleasant and efficient conversation with a French person, one thing is key… can you guess what it is? Confidence! How well do you think you will communicate in French if you don’t feel confident about your accent? If you are scared that people won’t understand you? Or even worse if you think someone might make fun of you? Without a minimum of confidence there is no room for communication. Yet if you feel confident, you can afford to make a few mistakes here and there because people will still understand you. What prevents a conversation from happening isn’t just a lack of knowledge, it’s also a lack of confidence. You need to have both to make it work, not to mention, to make it fun!

This course will teach you…

1- How to pronounce every letter of the alphabet

2- How to pronounce every digraph & trigraph

3- How to make every French sentence flow

4- How to pronounce the 100 most popular French words

5- How to pronounce the 50 most popular French phrases

6- How to avoid the pronunciation mistakes everyone makes

Online course # 3: FRENCH DICTÉES

French online course dictées

In the FRENCH DICTÉES online course you will find 20 videos + 10 audio files to help & accompany you every step of the way throughout the course. Why 20 videos? Because there are 10 dictées in total, each focusing on one particular topic, and for each dictée I have prepared 2 videos. Let’s say the video focuses on both French past tenses called imparfait & passé composé. The first video will go though the grammar, the conjugation, and all the tips on these two past tenses to help you understand and remember how and when to use them. The second video will be the actual dictée, a short story written by me, describing everyday life situations conveniently packed with imparfait and passé composé verbs! Boom! Efficient! The dictée will also be read by me, slowly first and then a little faster, with a close up on my face so you can more easily recognize the words and copy the shapes I make to improve your own pronunciation.

Become a French language expert

How do you become an expert at anything? By focusing on one thing at a time.

I’ve made sure to categorize and isolate either a verb tense, a verb group, a grammar or vocabulary topic per dictée, so you can effectively focus and interiorize concepts separately, which makes it a lot easier to remember them.

Here’s what you’re going to learn

What grammar & conjugation points will each dictée focus on?

Dictée # 1: Present tense

Dictée # 2: Past tenses – imparfait & passé composé

Dictée # 3: Future tenses – futur proche & futur simple

Dictée # 4: Conditional, imparfait, asking questions

Dictée # 5: Imperative form

Dictée # 6: First group verbs all tenses

Dictée # 7: Second group verbs all tenses

Dictée # 8: Third group verbs all tenses

Dictée # 9: Numbers

Dictée # 10: Prepositions

Each dictée is a short story written by me about practical everyday life situations. This means that not only do you get to work on conjugation & grammar drills, but you also improve your conversational skills at the same time: a magic combination for your next trip to France!

Grow your confidence talking about practical everyday topics

The dictées will refer to common topics that you are very likely to hear or very likely to use to express yourself such as:

-Traveling to France

-Socializing

-Childhood memories

-Family dynamics

-Everyday life routines

-How to express your ideas, opinions, and dreams

Two videos per dictée

First video: key grammar and conjugation reminders explained very clearly so you feel prepared and confident entering each dictée.

Second video: the actual dictée. I’ve made sure to categorize and isolate either a verb tense, a verb group, a grammar or vocabulary topic, so you can effectively focus and interiorize concepts separately, which makes it a lot easier to remember them.

And for you challenge lovers over-achievers?

Yes I have prepared something just for you! I have also made 10 audio files, 1 per dictée, so that if you wish to, if you want it extra difficult, if you want to test yourself more deeply, you can solely rely on sound. Indeed there are many occasions in life where we hear a language but we don’t see it: speaking to someone on the phone or listening to the radio for instance.

20 videos? 10 audio files? What else?

This new FRENCH DICTÉES online course also comes with written files with both the French text along with the English translation, so that you can evaluate yourself when you’re done taking notes.

To summarize, you’ll be able to use video, audio, and written material.

Dictées worked for me, they’ll work for you!

Let me tell you, I LOVE dictées because THEY WORK. And clearly you realize this too and that is smart of you. So now let’s see how something as simple as a dictée can truly help you become a little bit French! Your French language learning experience has never been so easy, fun, and fruitful. You can learn French online and benefit from the flexibility working at your own pace offers, while having me with you the whole time.
